Competitive pressures in the aerospace industry are rising. Also fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 75 percent per passenger kilometer by 2050 - according to the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe. The components of the future must be lighter and achieve higher efficiencies. Extreme in-flight temperatures and vibrations also challenge load capacity and component strength in engines and landing gear. The requirements of components suppliers for materials are correspondingly demanding: corrosion resistant and robust components are needed to guarantee machine functionality and safety long-term and in the future. And this requires top-quality special steel.

Aerospace component manufacturers can meet all necessary requirements with stainless steel grades from Ugitech and Deutsche Edelstahlwerke. Ugitech’s stainless steel grades UGI® AIR meet high aerospace industry standards and are used in space launcher engine components. The precipitation hardening, corrosion, acid, and heat resistant Aerodur®  steel grades by Deutsche Edelstahlwerke perform reliably in aircraft landing gears and other applications. High strength and toughness are decisive attributes. To further improve material toughness and thus the steel's load bearing capacity, SCHMOLZ + BICKENBACH material experts selectively optimize alloying constituents in the steel melt and process parameters during hot forming and heat treatment.

State-of-the-art technologies for purest materials

Given the high cyclic loads in the air and in a vacuum, even the most minute inclusion or material defect can result in component failure. Electro slag remelting furnaces guarantee the highest level of purity and homogeneity of mechanical steel properties for highly demanding applications. The performance of the special steel is improving together with the reliability of the processes. The best examples are the remelted stainless steel grades UGI® 15.5 PH AIR from Ugitech and Aerodur® 4545 Ultraclean from DEW. They guarantee maximum reliability of safety-critical components, like those in brakes and fuel distributors. Ugitech and Deutsche Edelstahlwerke are certified AS9100 and AS9120 as well as NADCAP approved.
